The Carpenter’s Son Learns a Valuable Lesson – A Story about Respecting Parents

The Carpenter’s Son Learns a Valuable Lesson

Velan, a carpenter, lived with his elderly father, Kuppan, in a village. Kuppan was weak and unable to walk properly, and Velan provided him with a small earthen plate that made even a little rice seem like a lot. Unfortunately, Velan was a bad man and a drunkard who often treated his father cruelly, verbally abusing him after drinking.

Velan had a ten-year-old son named Muthu, who loved his grandfather and respected him greatly. Muthu despised his father’s behavior and treatment of his grandfather.

One day, while Kuppan was eating from his earthen plate, it broke and spilled food on the floor. Velan became enraged and verbally abused his father. Muthu witnessed the incident and was saddened by his father’s behavior towards his grandfather. Although he was afraid to speak out against his father, he decided to take action.

The next day, Muthu took his father’s carpentry tools and a piece of wood to make a wooden plate. When Velan asked him what he was doing, Muthu replied that he was making a wooden plate for him, so that when he grew old like his grandfather, he would have a sturdy plate that wouldn’t break easily.

Velan was shocked and realized his mistake. He realized that his father had always been kind to him and had looked after him well. Now that his father was old and weak, Velan had been treating him cruelly. He felt remorseful and ashamed of his behavior.

From that day on, Velan treated his father with respect and gave up drinking. He learned a valuable lesson from his own son.

This story highlights the importance of always respecting and honoring one’s parents, as it is one’s duty and brings blessings.
